Enlarged prostate, its symptoms and treatment

The enlargement of the prostate gland, which is located below the bladder, is called enlarged prostate. The enlargement of the prostate disrupts the flow of urine as it surrounds the urethra tube, which takes urine from bladder and out through penis. It happens with the advancement in the age and persons above the age of 60 can suffer from it. The enlargement is not sign of cancer and its occurrence does not pose any risk of cancer in the future. It is also called benign non cancerous enlargement or benign prostate hyperplasia.

Since gland prostate surrounds urethra, from where the urine flow through bladder. The enlargement of prostate blocks the urine flow .Gradually with the increase in size of the prostate, the bladder has to contrast more to force urine through the body. This occurrence over the time strengthens the muscles of bladder making them thicker and sensitive. The bladder begins to contrast with the little urine in it, thus forcing the person to go frequently for urine. Eventually the bladder cannot empty itself because of narrow urethra and urine remains in it. Thus any difficulty in urine and need for frequent going for urination is the first symptoms of the enlargement of prostate gland. When bladder is not completely free of urine, the possibility of urinary tract infection arises. Blood in the urine, bladder stone and inability to urinate may follow next.

Medicines like alpha blocker may not work for every patient.  Another medicine 5 alpha reductase inhibitor can help in shrinking of the prostate but the patient has to take these medicines for at least 6 or may be up to 12 months to see their positive effect.

The surgeries are the most effective method to relieve the symptoms. They type of surgery recommended to a patient will decided after consultation with urologist. Urology consultant in Delhi . TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) is one of the common surgeries recommended by urologist for enlarge prostate. It contains a loop wire that is used by the surgeon to cut the prostate blocking the urethra. TUIP (transurethral incision of the prostate) is another treatment method in which cut marks are made on the prostate to reduce pressure on the urethra. After the surgery patient can go home on same day but has to wear the catheter for day or two. The relief from symptoms may be slower than TURP.  In open prostate surgery is done when the size of prostate is very large and bladder is damaged. It requires incision in the abdomen. In the laser surgery a high energy vaporizing laser is used to destroy the enlarged prostate tissue. Urologist for Laser Prostate Surgery. The patient is given general anesthesia before the laser surgery. The relief from symptoms is very quick but a patient may continue to suffer from painful urination for some days .retrograde ejaculation may also remain for sometime.
