Surgical methods used in treating prostate and their effects

When medication fails to cure the prostate issue, the surgery is the only method to cure the problem can cut the chance of further deterioration in condition of the patient. The surgery the enlarged portion of the prostate is removed.

In Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) surgery, the inner portion of the prostate is cut. This procedure is used in move 90 % of BHU surgeries. This procedure is conserved the best surgical treatment for an enlarged prostate. In this surgery, the external scars are not visible because the scope is inserted in the body through urethra.

In open prostatectomy or open surgery, the surgeon removes the enlarge tissue of the prostate after making a cut .This surgery is done when the prostate is very large. In laser surgery, the laser is used to cut the large tissue of the prostate and also shrink it. . In the Transurethral incision of the prostate, surgery, the cuts are made in the prostate gland. This is done to reduce the pressure of prostate on the urethra. This reduction in the pressure enables patient to urinate easily. This surgery is generally preferred for patient with small prostate.


Some patients may get the issue of retrograde ejaculation that is passing of semen into bladder instead of through urethra. In some rare cases, sexual dysfunction may also occur. The reason for this problem may be other than surgery.  The chances of retrograde ejaculation are less in  TUIP surgery method as compare with  TURP. The use of surgery whether TUIP or TURP is based on the size of the prostate and its shape. Use of laser in Urologist for Laser Prostate Surgery removing large prostate gives improvement in urinary flow and quality of life, which is similar to TURP surgery. The side effects after the use of laser surgery are few as compare to other surgeries. Surgery can remove some BHP symptoms but in some cases, it may not relieve all the symptoms.  In patients who have weaker bladder, the chances of urinary problem may continue even after the surgery.  But the chances of such occurrence are rare. With a BHP surgery, the problem of slightly erection may also develop. But patients, who have normal erection before the surgery, will not face any issue of erection after the surgery.
