Procedure for laser prostate surgery and its need

Laser surgery for prostate is done to relieve the moderate to severe pain caused by enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostate hyperplasia. During this surgery, the surgeon inserts a scope from the tip of the penis to the tube that carries urine from the bladder. This bladder or urethra is surrounded by prostate. The enlargement of prostate restricts the urine supply. The scope is used to pass a laser to the prostate. This laser removes the enlarged prostate by evaporating the tissue that is blocking the urethra and causes restrictions in the passage of urine.

The light of the laser is intense and concentrated which leads to dissolution of the enlarged tissue. The dissolution is done by two methods. One is ablation and other is enucleation.   In ablation method, the laser melts away the excess tissue. And in enucleation method, the laser cuts the excess tissue.

There are different types of prostate surgery involving laser. The photo selective vaporization surgery, the laser is used to melt the excess part of the prostate. In the holmium laser ablation, a different laser is used to melt the excess part of the tissue. In the  holmium laser enucleation, the job of the laser is to cut the enlarged part of the prostate. An instrument called morcellator is used to cut the enlarged tissue for easy disposal later. The surgeon will select the particular laser after considering the size of the prostate, health of the patient and facilities available in the hospital.
